AI Overviews (Google SGE)
Also known as: SGE, Search Generative Experience
What is AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google displays at the top of many search results, replacing the earlier Search Generative Experience (SGE) label. They synthesize an answer from multiple web sources and link to those sources, so the pages cited get visibility even above the #1 organic result.
To be cited in an AI Overview, a page needs the same signals answer engines reward: a clear, self-contained answer near a relevant heading, comprehensive topical coverage, structured data, and enough authority to be trusted. Featured-snippet-style formatting is a strong predictor.
AI Overviews can reduce clicks for purely informational queries (the answer is on the results page), which raises the value of being the cited source and of targeting queries where users still need to act or buy.
Why it matters
They sit above the organic results and can absorb the click — being a cited source is the new position zero.
AI Overviews — FAQ
What replaced Google SGE?
SGE (Search Generative Experience) graduated into 'AI Overviews' — the same concept of an AI-generated answer summary with source citations, now a standard feature rather than a labs experiment.
How do I appear in AI Overviews?
Lead with a concise answer under a matching heading, cover the topic comprehensively, add structured data, and build authority. The formatting that wins featured snippets tends to win AI Overview citations too.
